As you wrote, you think Hessen is far away from Bavaria. As I live in Germany, I can tell you that Hessen and Bavaria have a common border line, so it is quite likely that you both are connected (maybe). Hessen is north to Bavaria and in the northern part of Bavaria seems to be a center of the family name Karg. I spent some months there for my time in the army, and I found the name Karg there everywhere. My part of the familiy comes from northern Bavaria, too, exactly from Türkheim. Now I live in Pforzheim, Germany (state of Baden-Württemberg).
